The Science of Materialistic Love

There are mainly three stages of materialistic love i.e., lust, attraction and attachment.

1. Lust = Driven by the hormones testosterone and oestrogen – in both men and women.

2. Attraction = Three main neurotransmitters are involved in this stage; adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin. Scientist discovered that serotonin levels of new lovers were equivalent to the levels of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder patients.

3. Attachment = Oxytocin and vasopressin play a key role in this stage. The brain-chemicals deactivates the areas devoted to judgment so "you know the negatives of other person, but your brain is telling you it's OK to ignore them," says Lucy Brown, Ph.D., a professor of neuroscience.

Love plays havoc with your body chemistry so when a relationship ends, you experience symptoms that are similar to an addict's withdrawal because the magic-making brain chemicals are on hold. That's why our ancestors like Plato said, "love is a serious mental illness." Thanks to science for revealing these facts otherwise literary & poetic people make these chemical changes as something "heavenly" or even paralleled it to "Khuda with Muhabbat."
